Domain Names - 4 Key Tips to Choosing a Winner

So before you can have your website live on the web you need two things, a domain name and a hosting account. Here I'm going to be talking about domain names. Some thought is needed when choosing a domain and not rushing and buying the first one you find available.

o Research keywords - What is your website going to be about? You should list down some possible keywords that relate to your topic. The name of your website should match or have the same meaning as your domain name.

Web Hosting

o Domain name length - All the good short domain names have long gone, however there are still plenty to choose from. It should be long enough to make sense but no longer. Ideally no longer than 3-4 words that has a catchy ring to it.

o Hyphenated names - Some marketers choose to use hyphenated names for two reasons, the name they want is taken or it looks easier on the eye. It is easier to read the name with the words separated out. One note of caution if using off-line marketing, you can imagine your potential visitors forgetting to type in the hyphen.

o Domain extension - What is the golden rule on what extension to use? If your audience is in your local area or country, it is fine to use the appropriate extension like ".co.uk." However if your market is international, having a ".com" is the way to go; people tend to automatically type this in. You may lose potential traffic to your website if you choose something else.

Following these guidelines and you should be fine, remember it your identity. Once you've got your domain, next is to get a hosting account and creating your website.
